This collection contains one ledger from Read-Mossman, two merchants in Savannah, Georgia. The 657 page book contains entries and detailed purchase information for goods and services. There is no name index, except in the marginalia on the back two pages which index listings for Button Gwinnett. Pasted into approximately 60 pages of the ledger are newspaper clippings from 1865, probably from Union newspapers, which include news about the Civil War, news from Europe, and miscellaneous poetry and prose. Ledger may not be photocopied.

James Read (d. 1777) came to Savannah, Georgia from Charleston, South Carolina in 1759 where he was the proprietor of a ropewalk. In addition to being a business partner of James Mossman, Read served as a member of the Council of Georgia, as speaker of the Commons House of Assembly elected on May 25, 1764, as a warden for Christ Church in Savannah, and as a Commissioner for Pilotage for the Tybee Bar and Savannah River.
